Snow Caving

Thursday December 14, 2006
David Erickson's Web site, Outdoors With Dave, is all about outdoor education. Currently featured is an article by his son John about building, piling and choosing a good location for a snow cave. Snow has begun accumulating in parts of the country, and more is on the way. If you've ever thought about winter camping, maybe it's time to go tent-less.

Good article. Sadly, I’m still waiting for snow that decides to stay around.
A tip I would mention when building snowcaves, if you have access to small sticks on the ground, use about 8-12 inch long ones to poke into the roof. When you are digging the inside out and hit the ends of the sticks, you know when to stop so you don’t make the roof or sides too thin. You can pull some of the sticks out for ventilation as well.
