Fall in the National Forests

Thursday September 13, 2007
What better place to enjoy fall than in our national forests? Steve Nix, About's Forestry Guide, reports on this year's national forest fall foliage hotline, which opens in September: "This free hotline will provide national forest visitors weekly updates on fall foliage color changes throughout the nation." Steve also provides links to the Forest Service's Web site and numerous other resources to help you keep track of the changing fall colors.

(1) Ray Anderson says:

Quaking Aspens in the Rockies and Maples in New England get plenty of fall color hype. In the southwest the underrated cottonwood and willows can be spectacular. I never paid too much attention to southwest fall foliage until a late October trip around the Colorado River, Zion, Arches National Park, etc. I was wowed by the brillant colors blending with magnificent sandstone rock hues and geological formations.
