Fall Foliage Reports

Thursday October 18, 2007
Mother Nature puts on a color show every fall, and it's free. So why not enjoy it? Late fall is a great time to go camping. The leaves may have dropped, but the carpet they make in the woods and the sound of them rustling under your feet as you hike can be a beautiful and relaxing experience. Get outdoors and go camping, take a scenic drive or visit a park. Use this list of resources for fall foliage reports and touring information.

Our experiences with finding fall color Kodak Moments is like a box of chocholates, “you never know what you are going to get”.

Even when ‘Experts’ proclaim the “peak is past due”, do not despair.
Our basic theorum is the higher elevations change color earlier and the lower elevations change later. For example, the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mts has places around Bishop and Lone Pine with fall colors. The California Highway 49 Gold Country running through the Sierra Nevada Foothills has many opportunities in late October into November, including some excellent historical sites.

Also, limiting fall colors to just a few tree species, Aspens and Maples, ignores the profusion of other trees like Cottonwoods, Liquid Amber, Elm, Willows and the shrubs like the yellow blossoms of Rabbit Brush, and grasses.

Like Grandpa sez: “It’s the trip not the destination”.

Eastern USA colors : We just spent Oct 18-21 at Deep Creek Lake in Garrett Co. of Western Maryland. IT WAS SPECTACULAR!! I don’t know if the colors were at peak or not, but if that wasn’t peak, I would never be able to contain myself at any more wonderful foliage. Even my 2 grandsons who are 4 and 6 years old thought the colors were “tremendous and excellent”.
On our return trip back home, to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the differance in colors was like day and night. I would suggest if you have the oppertunity to go to Deep Creek Lake in the fall…DO IT!! I can give excellent referance’s if you want to rent a home while there. Very affordable and excellent accomidations for any size family.
