Common Mistakes Of New Campers
Thursday August 21, 2008
Many of you may have gotten some outdoor gear for a present over the holidays. Before you take it camping for the first time, try it out. One of the most common mistakes of new (and old) campers is not trying out new gear at home. The point is to become familiar with your gear before going on a camping trip.
- Erect new tents in the yard so that you are familiar with their setup before getting to the campground.
- Sleep in your sleeping bags on the floor for a night to see how comfortable they are.
- Try out cooking items in your kitchen first to make sure they work as expected.
- Wear new hiking boots around the house for a week or two to break them in ahead of time.
- Put batteries in and test any electronics to make sure they work before you leave home.

When testing your cooking products, test them outside, not in your kitchen. There are often harmful emissions from equipment that was never meant to be used indoors, like propane camp stoves and grills.
Try to wear gear at home instead for camping trip, don’t try at home the cooking products that makes harmful. test them outside your home.
A major part and enjoyment of camping is the camp fire. Here’s our suggestions:
Just like Survivor’s competitors learn to make a fire from a small amount of kindling wood.
Keep your fire small, there’s no need to light up the campground, and the indians call large fires: “whiteman fires”.
And never, never use briquet lighting fluid; it pollutes and does not keep the firewood going.
Also, alas many campgrounds are now prohibiting campfires because of irresponsible campers not following Smokey the Bear’s basic rules.
