Camping Destinations: Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon, AZ - photo © David Sweet licensed to About.com Inc.Looking for a camping destination that will create unforgettable memories? Consider visiting the Grand Canyon. Not only is it beyond words, but it's beyond your imagination. I've seen it, I've backpacked and camped there, I've climbed it and hiked it, I've flown over it, I refused to ride the mules into it, and I missed rafting through it. I was fortunate to live there for several years. During this time, I saw more wildlife and spectacles of nature than I have seen during the rest of my life. For example:

One summer day I was walking the rim after a storm that had actually traveled up the canyon yet below the rim, so I was looking down on the storm. I could see the lightning and hear the thunder rumble up the canyon walls, but what was really a sight was the double rainbow that followed the storm through the canyon. Looking at the rainbow from above, I could see the entire circle rather than just an arch. I've never seen such a rainbow since. more...
