How Often Do You Camp?
Friday October 16, 2009
I had to turn the furnace on this week, and a possible freeze is in the weather forecast. Brrr. Bitter cold discourages me from camping. The 4th of July is one holiday that you won't find me camping either. I also like tranquility when I camp. You'll usually find me camping in April, May, September and October. I prefer mild climates, remote locations and uncrowded campgrounds.

Holidays provide an extra day of vacation for camping, but we have learned our lesson from numerous July 4th fiascos, campsites which are limited to 6 people, but end up with 3 dozen, drunk and or drugged campers oblivious to anyone but themselves, outofcontrol kids terrorizing the camp, noise all night long, etc. etc.
We are fortunate to have lakes nearby for day trips and most prohibit alcohol and some prohibit motor boats. My favorite lake is Natomas a small lake with kayakers, sailors, and windsurfers. And no fireworks.
PS: If July 4th is an important time to camp, suggest getting as far away from the cities as possible and camp near the campground host.
I love long weekends, but I just don’t think that a long weekend is long enough for a decent camping trip. Given all the work it takes to pack and unpack, I need longer than 3 or 4 days!
My hubby and I still prefer to camp during the week.
While our kids were growing up, we always camped Monday thru Friday. It worked perfectly for us, having our son and daughter each bring a friend with them. We would pretty much have the campground to ourselves. Nature at its best !!
Camping on the Missouri river Ft. Thompson, South Dakota. With the dreadful West Nile disease, why don’t you spray for them? The gnats and mosquitos are overwhelming. It never changes and I camp there most of the summer. Please make a note of this and PLEASE spray the campground. I am sure other areas need it too. Thank you, Al Gray
I agree with Dave. Cooler climate tranquillity and remote campgrounds. We went camping one year in May to Holly River in WV. It was the week before Memorial day. We packed up 2 days earlier than we planned. The campground was full and unbearable.
My huband and I camp from May 1st to October 1st since we retired. We have a permanent campsite in northern NY Adirondacks. We can’t wait each year for the end of April to start getting ready to go. We have made many long distance friends during the winter months and close friends during camping season!
Poorly worded survey. Should be either “How many camping trips per year” or “How many nights camping per year?” If I make (and have done) a 2-month, 14,000 mile trip, is it one or 60? Without differention, the survey loses all value.
Winter camping is the best. Less bugs and see and hear better. There is nothing like a fire and a warm sleeping bag. Of coarse getting out of that warm bag is not so fun.
Our camping experiences vary from fairly primitive settings on private family owned ground, to State recreational areas, to living in our trailer for several days at our county fair where our boys show horses. Each venue has it’s own merits.
When we are out on the farm with just us and the horses it’s peaceful.
When we are at a park we enjoy nature, but also love walking around and seeing other’s campsites and rigs.
The county fair experience is a great chance to camp among a big group of friends with a lot to do!!
That’s the flexibility of camping!! It can be tailored to fit in with a variety of other activities, or stand alone as an activity itself!!
Camping is my favorite thing to do. If I could live in a tent or camper from late spring to mid autumn, I would. I working in the construction field so during the non-snowy months I’m working as much as I can but try to get out as much as I can. I’ve recently been given an old truck camper. This year I’m hoping I can get a lot more.
Camp a week in Spring & a week in Fall. Health issues prohibit Hot weather camping. Would love to camp more but husband’s job doesn’t allow for long weekend trips. Have to agree with others that it is TOO much work for just a weekend, at least for me. Think I would like to camp for at least 3 months at a time, maybe one day!!!!
Capt. Mike,
We do not need your 4 cents in here if you do not like this site stay out!
we camped quite a bit this year. the only we really missed out on is labor day weekend and columbus day weekend. columbus day weekend was really cold and wet. we are already book for next memorial weekend and 4th of july. soon i will book for labor day weekend.
Every chance I get! I went more this year than ever, I think about 6 or 7 times, and loved every time! Went in April, May, June, July, August, and September! Wanted to go this month, but didn’t make it… I usually will take a couple of vacation days, Friday and Monday, make it a long weekend and go local.
winter seems to be the best time. not as many inconsiderate, obnoxious, drunken rednecks to deal with letting their kids run loose so they don’t have to deal with them while they run through other peoples campsite. another reason to find an out of the way secluded campsite. I truly prefer backpack camping where i can choose any place in the woods I want to go.
We try to camp at least once a month. We went this past weekend and it was really cold, but the heater in the motor home worked great. Why let a little thing like cold keep you from enjoying the great outdoors????
We have been camping for about 35 years starting in a tent and progressing to a pop-up, travel trailer and finally a 39 foot 5th wheel. When we finally left the midwest and moved to Las Vegas (something that was in the planning for about 15 years) we did it in a 5th wheel. We became full timers and even though we lived in a trailer, we bought a 24 travel trailer so we could still enjoy camping without taking our home with us. After 4 years, we bought a house (decided to make Las Vegas our home) and still have a pick-up camper. There is so much to see within 100 miles of Las Vegas. We love to go up in the mountains of Nevada and Utah sometimes every weekend, away from the hustel and bustel. I think we will be buried in a camper, it has been so much of our life (you can have the pine box).
