Have You Tent Camped In The Snow?
Friday November 13, 2009
Winter weather is encroaching on most parts of the country. Now imagine camping at this time of year and exiting your tent in the morning to a snow covered campsite. That warm sleeping bag probably never felt better. Tent camping in the snow can be fun and exhilerating. If you haven't already done so, you should give it a try. Just be sure to go prepared.

I grew up camping in the Colorado mountains – both summer and winter. As a scout we camped monthly year round…even when the temperature dipped below zero. I can remember spending hours digging out a camp site in order to pitch a tent. It was hard work, but after it was all set up there was amazing quiet and an absolutely gorgeous view as the moon lit up the snow and made it sparkle. We camp in a trailer now, so we don’t get out in the snow, but I agree with you…winter camping in a tent is not difficult and the reward can be fantastic!
I’d love to, but my husband is rather wimpy.
Not yet, but I just got a canvas wall tent, I am looking forward to it!
Robert says it well the rewards are great and the quiet is something you have to experience. I found it to actually be warmer than I had expected, a lot warmer, until you opened the tent. I have camped a lot out in all weather, snow included. I can actully only think of one time that I was uncomfortable and it was horrible conditions with heavey wind, freezing rain, rain, snow, pretty much everything. Trees blowing down. We had no choice and it was not something normal people should do. A couple that had not tied their tent down actually blew away and we had to rescue them which made it even worse. Still it was a great experience, would I do it again…Yes. Just be prepared, and it is a great time.
One of the most enjoyable camping trips I can remember was camping in Yosimite Valley between Christmas(1983) and New Years with 2-3 feet of pristine snow on the ground. I thing my girlfriend and I and her two sons were the only people in the valley. The secret to enjoyment is proper equipment, food, and clothing.
Yes I have in a tent and in a camper both north of Yosemite..
Try going through 2 different winter survival programs! One in Alberta, Can. and one in the Maine woods. Any thing for the US Navy!
I’vecamped many times with the Boy Scouts in a tent in the snow. I’m looking foward to another trip in February 2010. The coldest I’ve tent camped in was minu7 degrees in my tent. My last snow tenting trip I had to dig out nearly 30 inches of snow to get my tent on the ground.
I would love to camp in the snow sometime, and maybe this winter will be the one! We’ll have to take a bit of a roadtrip, though, as we don’t get snow here in the lowcountry of SC.
