Have You Ever Camped on the Holidays?

Have camped many yrs, 10+ during holidays. Wonderful and couldn’t be more peaceful…. Love it!!!!

I have camped numerous times over Thanksgiving and New Year’s, but not X-mas. Friends and I usually go steelhead fishing somewhere in Northern California or Southern Oregon. It’s great, often we are the only ones camping in the area.

I am sitting at Ocean Lakes CG Myrtle Beach, SC right now.
I am have been here all week and we just had Thanksgiving dinner with 12 other families who are camping with us.
This is our 7th Thanksgiving together.
We started with 3 families and it grows each year, as more families get into camping.

We camped this weekend out in Ridgecrest desert. I is a family tradition for over 20 years. We ride our dirt bikes and party with many friends that all met the same weekend. There is no better way to spend a long weekend

we have camped (I THINK 3 YEARS IN A ROW) in Branson, Mo. over Thanksgiving. and been camping in Tupelo, Ms. (to visit relatives) over Christmas more times than I can keep track of. We camp almost every year at our seasonal CG over EASTER weekend.
Never camped on New Years

My husband and I have a tradition of camping over the Thanksgiving holiday. Our kids are grown and out of state with their own lives and we have no other family nearby. This year we took our three 12 week old kittens with us. What a hoot!

We camp over the holidays whenever possible. Anywhere south of here where it is warmer. This year it’s Christmas in OK camping on my son’s property. A real camper must camp, ya know?

On Thanksgiving of 2006 we were in Anthony, New Mexico and it was beautiful. Had the door and windows open and a lot of people standing outside smelling the cooking turkey and pies. It was awesome. Missed the family but had a good time.

We had for years, before we retired met several couples for Thanksgiving and Christmas….Lots of love there and the food to die for great! Now that the grandkids are bigger we have stopped for a few years but I tell you we may just start bring them along because we had so much fun…everyone becomes your family….giving with a smile and a hug means so much to us all…

We leave the a couple of days after Christmas to go snowmobiling. We stay thru the New Year and longer. We camp-out in the R.V. in the snow for 6 to 9 days, spending the days snowmobiling and the nights around a bonfire, staring at the bright stars, breathing the sharp, clean, chilly night air. It has turned into a family event for the past 8 years now. My wife, daughter, in-laws, and a few friends head out every year. We see other familar faces time after time. Some of these people come from as 400 miles away just to spend the New Year up in the mountains. These people seem become your “winter” family; sharing and enjoying the same things you do. It is bliss…..

We started camping out on Thanksgiving we had so much fun we did it every year to the many complaints of our family…then when 911 happened we said ok we stay home and have Thanksgiving dinner with the family…family all left town! Never again we have more real “family” in rv parks than at home……the deversity of food is so nice too…and all the people gather there who meet us want to be with us instead of a required visit to the relatives….Christmas is getting that way to just mail a gift card and we’ll talk at you later…get more love in an rv park, they treasure what time we all have left and make the most of it…..

We’ve been camping on Thanksgiving for 7 years. My family really enjoys getting together for this special occasion, we usually have three sites and about 23 people. I fry a turkey, and grill some ribeyes over the fire, along with all the fixins. All year long everyone is looking forward to Thanksgiving at our place, wherever it may be.

We camp at Christmas and New Years in a Yurt, the yurts can be found in Provincial Parks in Canada and in National Parks in the USA….

The yurt we camp at has a wood burning stove and skylight…it is so peaceful and a truly winter wonderland…the rangers bring you and your gear by sleigh to the yurt…i never thought with our cold Canadian Winters I would go winter camping!

Our first time was Thanksgiving 1986 was in Shenandoah Nat’l Park, VA. Beautiful weather, friendly folks and lots of deer visiting the campsite. Our small pop-up was hit from the rear at a toll booth but we could get it open with a crow bar for one last trip. The second time was 10 years later and tent camping, the Park was closed for the season, found a small campground in Waynesboro, VA. But cold weather and snow sort of made it a little less fun. (who knew the air in the mattress would be as cold as the outside air) Friendly folk at a local outfitters supplied us with foam pads, woolen hats and mittens and gave us directions to a great place for dinner.

One Thanksgiving we drove to New york City with our truck camper and camped with a view of the Statue of Liberty outside our window!
It was great! We took the subway to the Macy’s Day parade and afterwards dined in the city and then explored. Among those in our campground were circus performers. It was great fun to rub elbows with them and hear their advetures as we waited in line for the showers and sinks. Though we were not with friends and family, it was a memorable and delightful camping weekend!

I have a friend that does some kind of adventure holiday every year. Last year they spend the holidays kayaking through the Everglades. They still exchanged gifts, but it was things they could take with them.. I think got a pair of smartwool socks. That would rather spend money on the adventure and the time together then the gifts.

We have been camping now for several years in Seligman, AZ where we and some friends have some land. We go there on Thanksgiving, and have done Easter a couple of times. Also, they camp on New Years there. It is a good time, as we bring all the atv’s and dirt bikes, and ride, ride, ride. A good time to get away from it all, as there is spotty phone service, and no tv. We love it, and for those who have not camped on the Holidays, you should give it a “whirl”!

yes, we camped last Thanksgiving for a week and we really enjoyed it 2009,this New Years Eve we are going to camp again for a week.More of you guys should really try to go on a Holiday it’s great.Barbara

My husband’s family cycles through the aunts’ & uncles’ places to host Thanksgiving each year, and when we go out of town for the big family reunion, we tent camp. We love it! We’re close to the action but maintain some privacy and control over when we get to go to bed, etc. And we’re always welcome to take showers at some relative’s house, so it’s the best of both worlds.

Yes, we have camped on Thanksgiving weekend. My sister-in-law lives in N.Jersey and we live in Virginia. We met and camped in Carlisle,PA at Western Village Campground. It’s half-way for both of us. We had a great time, turkey and all the goodies to go with it.

This will be our first year to go camping on a Holiday. (New Year’s Eve) We will be camping with a Couple that are long time friends. My Hubby and our Friend both retired after being Police Officers for more than 30 years. We are looking forward to some peace and quiet at the Beach !!
