Which Camper Are You?

By , About.com Guide   July 23, 2010

Native08 prefers to get away from it all:
"Why bother to go camping, if not for the solitude and oneness with nature? Wilderness camping is where I go to chill."

jkd518 married a social butterfly:
"Camp goes like this, we pull in, unload and set up camp. I get the dinner going while the kids take off and Hubby goes to find a new friend. They wander back in about time dinner is ready, and I get to hear about the discoverys they have made."

Phil likes a little of both:
"I certainly don't mind socializing at the campground, in fact I love meeting new people that way. I do however prefer a campsite itself that offers some amount of privacy."

On our last trip, I was at the designated firewood spot sawing wood with a manual saw. An elderly couple came over and the husband had a small chain saw and helped us out. Our family became friends with them. It was a joy visiting with such nice people, but it’s also nice to have some solitude.

I am a tent camper and my wife and I like the solitude of primitive campsites. My only issue is with the people who take their motorhomes to the primitive campsites and “need” to run their generators till 11:00 PM and then crank them up again at 6:00 AM to get the coffee going. I know that generators are allowed at certain times, but I just miss the birds chirping at dawn. Makes me sad sometimes.

I like a little of both as well. I’m all about meeting new people and making new friends and memories. On the other hand, it’s nice to be far away from other campers to enjoy privacy with the family.

Sometimes it is good just to get away from everyone and leave your troubles behind. The best way I know how to relax, but I do enjoy being around others at the campgrounds. Socializing lets you get to know people, and thats a good feeling.

As I type this we are at a very nice campground which is very quiet. We have lots of books and I have my computer (they have free Wi-Fi). We are here from busy lives and just want to relax, read and enjoy each other. Sociable to the extent that we speak to others and converse, but not into group activities this week. Next week may be a different story. And we like the planned trips to places like Branson organized by clubs. We met some people who are now very good friends from SC after a group gathering at Pigeon Forge, TN. So, yes, we like it both ways, but sometimes prefer peace and quiet.

I love tent camping. If you mainly talk to those around you, they get to know you and can trust you in case of flooding or any storm. The quiet time is nice, but if you act stuck up and you have a problem at the campsite, others will not ever help you. In short, treat others how you want to be treated.

I guess it depends on how much time I’ve had to myself or with my family in recent days. If we haven’t had a lot of togetherness, or if I haven’t had some alone time, I tend to be friendly to other campers without being extremely sociable. The most important reason to go camping is to make happy memories. Unless you feel like your campsite neighbors are going to be long term friends, getting overly involved with them isn’t really a top priority for me … not like taking a great hike or relaxing with a good book on the lake shore.
