How Far Did You Travel?

By , About.com Guide   January 14, 2011

Every September I head to Ocracoke Island, which is on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I live in Kentucky, so it's about 700 miles from home. The campground is located just over the sand dunes from the beach, which is the attraction that makes the long trip more than worthwhile.

Last weekend we headed about 275 miles southwest in search of warmer weather. We stayed at Onondaga Caves State Park in Missouri where it reached a freakish 82 degrees. Compared to the cold windy 30’s in Chicago, it felt like heaven.

Last year, we drove 500 miles to camp at the Bay of Fundy National Park in N.B. We used this as a home base to visit family members around N.B. A beautiful area, and a great park.

Last fall (2010) we traveled from our home in NC on a 7,000+ mile trip to the Grand Tetons, Valley of Fire, Death Valley and Big Bend for a lovely tour. We have a 12 year old 24-foot travel trailer, Silverado pickup and a small mountain fiest dog—all behaved quite well. As senior citizens, we take our time and enjoy the everyday travel and people.

Whether 10 miles or 300, since getting there is half the fun, it’s all still a fun part of the whole camping adventure!

We drove from Mississippi to Anchorage and on up to Fairbanks with our RV. We drove to St. Rupert, BC first and boarded a ferry boat to Juneau, AK. Next morning we were back on another boat “Manauska” and continued to Skagway, and once continued on our journey to the North Pole, AK. We searched for golf in a creek and after staying at different campgrounds along the way, we finally settled in a wonderful campground north of Anchorage. We stayed 3 1/2 months and had a wonderful time. This was in June, July, August, and September and the weather was at it greatest. It started to rain lightly in September, but it was refreshing. The people were great and helpful all along the way. We then drove all the way home to the Southwest. That was a wonderful vacation, and I would do it again!
