Nearly 50 percent of all Americans age six and older went outdoors last year, according to a recent study by The Outdoor Foundation. That equates to 137.9 million Americans getting outside. Despite economic trends, Americans are still recreating as much as in previous years.
Running was the most popular outdoor activity for both youths and adults, with more than 50 million participants. Camping, including car and RV camping, is ranked third favorite outdoors activity for both youths and adults. Last year more than 40 million Americans went camping. Fishing, hiking and bicycling also ranked in the top outdoors activities.
But the great part about going camping isn't just being outdoors; it is the outdoor recreational opportunities a camping destination typically offers. There are many excellent outdoor camping destinations in the US with great fishing streams, lakes for boating and bicycling and hiking trails.
