I think snow camping is great. Three essential pieces of gear for me are: a tent that won’t collapse under a load of snow, a really warm sleeping bag, and an Esbit stove with heat tablets used to make quick hot drinks and cups of soup.
I love it! warm is nice but there is something to be said for the snow too! building a lean-to out of pine branches and crawling in your sleeping bag (make sure it’s a warm one!) is neat! waking up is nippy BUT…the beauty of it all & the experience! mine has been in the Colorado Rockies (Roosevelt Ntl. Forest & Rocky Mountain Ntl. Park) & in the mountains in northern CA! both are beautiful areas! it’s all about common sense! and having good supplies with you!
Don’t go to the mountains unprepared with both supplies AND knowledge!
But snow camping is an awesomely rewarding experience!!!
DO IT!!!!
oh and remember to hang your food up from the animals!
and be careful where walking! last time we went our friend sunk in snow near to his chest walking across an field of snow between the mountains! he could have gone in more with the weight of him & his pack. be careful!
Good equipment is a must, it always amazes me to see people wearing $20 boots and blue jeans standing around camp site complaining about how cold, wet and miserable they are.
I have a pair of Mountain Hardwear Down Booties that are amazing — they keep my feet warm on the snow and if it is really cold, I even wear them in my sleeping bag!
Winter camping is the only way to go. Good plastic boots a white gas stove and down sleeping bag in a nice tent is my enjoyment.
