Characters from Dr. Seuss' The Lorax are re-discovering the forest this year and they are hoping to introduce American children to the outdoors too.
The U.S. Forest Service has launched a public service announcement with the Ad Council and Universal Pictures in order to get kids and parents interested in the outdoors. Characters from Dr. Seuss' classic tale are featured in the ongoing "Discover the Forest" campaign.
Children in the U.S. spend fifty percent less time outdoors than they did twenty years ago, according to the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.
Research shows that children who play outside have lower stress levels and more active imaginations, become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems and are more likely to become environmentally conscious in the future.
"If the parents or family members can help in getting them there, we promise to provide children with some of the most beautiful natural playgrounds you'll find anywhere," U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said in a press statement.
