Do Groundhogs Like to Camp?

By February 2, 2013

Follow me on:

The groundhog saw its shadow today in Pennsylvania, which means spring is on its way. Fair-weather campers rejoice!

Groundhog Day is celebrated each year on February 2. According to folklore, if the groundhog emerges from its burro and sees a shadow, it will retreat back into the ground and winter will continue for six more weeks. But, if it is cloudy on Groundhog Day, spring will arrive early. And this year the groundhog is ready for winter's end!

You might be wondering what groundhogs have to do with camping? Well, if you love camping in moderate weather and sunshine, then you are probably waiting for the seasons to change!

Respond in the comments: How do you get your camping fix in the off-season?

I love to winter camp, but if I need a warm weather fix then I head to the desert. Death Valley National Park is my favorite winter getaway!

I get my winter camping fix by …going camping! Here in NC you can get some wonderful weekends even in the dead of winter. You can end up with highs of 70′s. If it’s been a few weeks without campng, I have to get my camping fix…I call it “Campfire Therapy”, by just braving the woods on a cold weekend with beautiful sunshine and I just make sure I’ve got lots of blankets and enjoy a huge fire. The only reason that you should ever be cold camping is because you are not sitting close enough to the fire.
