Glossary of Camping Terms

Tuesday January 23, 2007
Are you new to camping? Ever hear of a guy-line, billy can, or noseeums? If you are unfamiliar with the termonology being used by campers, then check the camping glossary for an explanation of the most common terms and phrases used at the campground. For example:
  • guy-line - a rope used to secure tents and keep them from blowing away. This also keeps the tent walls taut so that they don't flap in the wind.

  • billy can - a coffee can (any clean food can with the lid removed) used to boil water or cook food over a campfire.

  • noseeums - also known as biting midges, these nasty little bugs are typically found near the ocean and around rivers, lakes and swamps.
