Ziploc Omelets may be Toxic

This morning I was watching the Rachel Ray show, and she had a guest who demonstrated how to make omelets in a bag, which are simply eggs and other ingredients mashed together in a Ziploc baggie and submersed in boiling water to cook. I used to have several variations of this recipe on the camping site until I received an email where the University of Illinois was claiming that Ziploc omelets may be toxic. (read more)

I agree that you should never cook in a Ziplock type bag. But, if you have meal sealer and the bags that are made for it, you can cook in them. Those bags tolerate higher temperatures. They are considered to be food safe.

In fact, you can prepare all sorts of foods, seal them in seal a meal bags and cook them in boiling water. I even use them in the microwave oven after I punch a couple of holes in them to let the steam out.

One caveat though: Even seal a meal bags have their limits. You should not microwave greasy foods in them because they will melt at the higher temperatures and let your food run out.
