Family Tents

By David Sweet, About.com

Shopping for a new family tent? As a general rule, get a tent that will accommodate at least one more person than will be using it. For best weather protection, look for a tent with a full rain fly, a tub floor, sealed seams and good ventilation. The best way to shop for a tent is to go to a sporting goods store and check them out in person. You'll get a better feel for the tent sizes and features. If you prefer to shop online, choose your family size from the list below, and then read the reviews and compare prices for family tents from Coleman, Eureka, Kelty, Paha Que', REI, Sierra Designs, The North Face and more.

1. Tents for a family of 3

For young families consider a 4-person tent. There will be plenty of room for 2 adults plus 1 child. Tents in this category are typically dome tents that are lightweight and easy to set up. If you plan on a larger family, consider starting out with a larger tent (see below).

2. Tents for a family of 4

You've got 2 kids, and they are growing. Consider a 6-person tent for optimum elbow room. This tent will suffice for many years. At least until the kids want a tent of their own. Again, if you plan on a larger family, consider starting out with a larger tent (see below).

3. Tents for a family of 5 or more

You've got 3 or more kids, and you need a family tent with lots of space. You may want to consider a lodge style tent, which is a large square tent that you can stand up in, or you may need a multi-room tent, which would provide extra space and a little privacy.
