Few people realize there is a great tropical camping paradise in the US called Puerto Rico, and there is no better destination than El Yunque National Forest, which also happens to be the only rainforest in the National Forest System.
El Yunque is abundant with exotic flora and fauna. Here one may chance a glimpse of the very rare Puerto Rican parrot as well as about 50 other species of birds. Not so rare, although unique to Puerto Rico, are the tree frogs, called coquis, that serenade nightly in the forest. Also abundant are many species of lizards and crabs. Fortunately there are no poisonous snakes.
To experience the diversity of this rainforest, put on some good walking shoes, pack rain gear and plenty of insect repellent, and begin exploring the wonderful hiking trails of El Yunque. But don't go unprepared. Although the rainforest has no designated campgrounds nor usage fees, a permit is required.
For a complete Puerto Rico outdoor adventure vacation, you might want to consider an eco-tourism guide service such as Elena's Camping Safaris. Elena has spent most of her life living in Puerto Rico and the forest, and shares her love of El Yunque with that of sailing throughout the Caribbean. Her adventures will not only take you into the forest, but have you camping on the beaches, exploring the attractions on the outer islands of Culebra, Mona, or Vieques, swimming in bioluminescent bays, visiting lighthouses, caving to underground rivers, and fishing in fresh water lakes and the ocean.
