Pacific Coast Scenic Byway

Destinations Oregon

By David Sweet, About.com

The Oregon Coast offers travelers a variety of spectacular scenery. From the majestic rain forests of the north, through the sandy beaches and dunes, to the rugged seaside cliffs further south, it's easy to see how Highway 101 earned the distinction as a National Scenic Byway.

Apart from the great scenery, there's plenty of recreational opportunities to attract vacationers to the Oregon Coast too. Choice camping is available at the state parks and private campgrounds all along the coast. Fishing and hiking are ever popular here, as well as birding, boating, cycling, horse riding, photography, surfing, whale watching, and wildlife viewing.

Other points of interest to visitors along the Oregon Coast include the Oregon Coast Aquarium at Newport, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the Prehistoric Gardens in Port Orford, the Sea Lion Caves just north of Florence, and Oregon's many lighthouses. And of course there's the charm, culture, local events, seafood eateries, hospitality, and travel services of Oregon's coastal communities.

The Oregon Coast is overflowing with camping opportunities. For further Oregon coast travel information, visit:
