How To Season Dutch Ovens

By David Sweet, About.com

Brand new cast-iron Dutch ovens come out of the factory with a protective coating. This coating must be removed, and the Dutch oven must be cured, prior to first use.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Wash the Dutch oven in hot soapy water with a stiff brush or plastic scouring pad.
  2. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  3. Coat the entire surface of the Dutch oven with vegetable oil or shortening.
  4. Place upside down in an oven with a sheet of aluminum foil underneath to catch drippings.
  5. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.
  6. Allow the Dutch oven to cool slowly in the oven.
  7. Then store uncovered in a cool, dry place.

Tips:

  1. Never store food in your Dutch oven.
  2. If your Dutch oven develops rust, scour the rust area completely and season again.
