How To Make Desktop Wallpapers With Paint Shop Pro

By David Sweet, About.com

Ever wonder how to brighten up your desktop with some personal photos. I learned how using Paint Shop Pro, and you can too.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Using Paint Shop Pro (version 5 or later), open the image that you want to make into a desktop wallpaper.
  2. Use menu option Window/Duplicate to create a copy of the image to work on.
  3. Use the Selection tool to copy the part of the image to use for the desktop wallpaper.
  4. Click the Copy button on the tool bar which places a duplicate of your selection on the Windows clipboard.
  5. Next, create a new image using the menu option Edit/Paste/As New Image.
  6. If you started with an image that was bigger than your desktop, resize this image to your desktop dimensions using the menu option Image/Resize.
  7. Add a new layer to the image using the menu option Layers/New Raster Layer with the opacity set at 50%.
  8. Now use the Flood Fill tool and a color of white to fill the selected layer. This gives the image that opaque look.
  9. Lastly, use the menu option Selections/Select None, followed by Layers/Merge/Merge All.
  10. This image can now be saved as a BMP file and used as a desktop wallpaper.

Tips:

  1. Always keep your original images intact, only work with copies.
  2. When creating a new layer, play around with the opacity setting to achieve the desired look.
