Eve - We tried several campgrounds over the years and found Wagon Trail about eight years ago. We've come back for two weeks in the spring and fall ever since.
Campground Review
We have tent camped for 12 years, and Wagon Trail is the most beautiful and well maintained campground we've ever stayed at. It's a forested campground located on the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula. It offers a quieter pace in secluded campsites with beautiful trails for hiking and scenic roads for biking. The campground accommodates tents, campers and RVs, and cabins. Most sites have water and electricity hookups. The sites are meticulously cleaned and raked within an hour or so of campers leaving. The bathrooms feature plenty of sink space, several enclosed showers with shampoo (imagine that), and room to dress outside the shower. The bathrooms and showers are cleaned daily and checked each night, and during the busy season cleaning rounds are made more frequently. Outside the bathrooms is a double sink counter with hot and cold water for washing dishes. There is a camp store in the office complex that sells personal and food items at a reasonable cost and of course wood for your campfire. Washers and dryers are available next to the office, and there is a warm, welcoming lounge with a fireplace and plenty of wood for a fire.
A game room is off the lounge with doors for privacy if you wish. The office complex also offers an area for cleaning fish with a sink and large work surface. The staff working in the office are friendly and helpful and most come back each summer to work. We look forward to seeing them each spring and fall. The owners Dick and Sherry spend the entire season maintaining and improving the campground. Their standards are high with no shortcuts.
Wagon Trail Campground is only a short 1/4 mile walk to Rowley's Bay and the Wagon Trail Resort where you can rent kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, and pedal boats. The resort is right on the lake, and it has a very nice dining room, but our favorite spot is Grandma's Swedish Kitchen where they make the most delicious pastry and breads imaginable as well as soups and sandwiches. I love to just sit with a cup of coffee and look out at the lake.

An easy five minute drive will get you across the peninsula to Ellison Bay or Sister Bay and from there you can go north or south on Highway 42 to the several small, quaint towns Door County is famous for and shop till you drop. There are lots of festivals throughout the summer and fall on both sides of the peninsula. Wagon Trail Campground has everything you need, and it's a great base for all Door County has to offer. Our daughters and their families vacation there every year. We highly recommend that you give it a try.
