Question:

I am going to buy a popup camper. I am planning to go out West (Yellowstone) and would like to know if the camper can be heated well enough to be comfortable during winter nights.

Answer:

My wife and I own a popup and the coldest weather we've camped with it has been around 40 degrees. We do not have a heater, but plenty of blankets and covers. We slept quite comfortably. Now I know this isn't the cold of winter you'll be encountering in Yellowstone. Some popups have heaters in them, so I suppose they should work well enough to keep the inside of the popup relatively warm (you still may need to bundle up in warm clothes). Remember that the popup is just a canvas-walled camper and is not efficient at all as far as holding heat, so you will likely need to run the heater all the time. Myself, I wouldn't worry as much about keeping warm as I would about using the popup in an area where it can snow literally feet overnight. I don't think the popup would fare well under those circumstances. Also, since they have canvas walls, the snow will melt and wick through the popup's walls making it very damp.

So, if you're thick blooded enough, I'd say "go for it!" Just be careful about allowing snow to build up on top of the camper.
