The Run for the Roses is here, and Churchill Downs and Louisville are ready to party. There's much more than the derby to attract you. For the two weeks prior to the race, the communities around Louisville celebrate all kinds of outdoor fun during the annual Kentucky Derby Festival.
I live in Kentucky and I like to watch the horses run, but I must confess that I have never been to the Kentucky Derby. But you don't have to be there to have your own Derby party. Derby day is a great excuse for inviting friends over, making some mint juleps, cooking some traditional derby recipes, and watching the thoroughbreds race.
If you are fortunate, as I am, to have friends who live in the country hosting the party, then don't let this opportunity for a one night campout slip by. Get outdoors during derby weekend with the family or some friends and have a little fun. It's springtime and the horses are running!
