Favorite summer activities include hiking among forests of aspen, birch, pine and spruce; canoeing, kayaking, boating, and houseboating in the only water-based park in the NPS; and observing the abundant wildlife, which includes bear, beaver, deer, moose, wolves, bald eagles, and loons. Probably the most popular attraction to this area is some of the best walleye and small mouth bass fishing to be found anywhere. Also abundant are crappie, lake trout, muskies, and northern pike. Local guide services are available from gateway communities to take you to the hot fishing holes. There are over 150 primitive campsites available only to paddlers and boaters along the remote shores of the parks four major lakes: Kabetogama, Namakan, Rainy, and Sand Point. And for those less inclined to get on the water, there are numerous shoreline campgrounds and RV parks in the local communities around the park's boundaries. Winter does not exclude travelers to this great wilderness either. From late December through the end of March, the area is a popular destination for a variety of winter activities, including ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and camping in a winter wonderland.
