Destinations South Dakota

The Badlands, Mt. Rushmore,
and Crazy Horse Memorial

The Black Hills, known as Paha Sapa to the Sioux, are a wonderland of natural and man-made sculptures, the most famous of which are Badlands national park, Mt. Rushmore national monument, and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

South Dakota travelers usually include a visit to one of these attractions in their vacation plans. However, in 1874, with the discovery of gold, men were attracted to the Black Hills for different reasons, and today that same attraction is found for the famous Black Hills gold jewelry.

Someday to be the world's largest sculpture, the Crazy Horse Memorial celebrated it's 50th anniversary on June 3rd, 1998 with the unveiling of the finished face of Crazy Horse. Begun in 1947 as a memorial to Native Americans, this mountain is a spectacle to see.

The next time you're planning a rugged camping trip, consider a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
