I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota. - Teddy Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt came to North Dakota in 1883 to hunt bison, but left with a deeper appreciation for nature and wildlife. With a rekindled attitude, Roosevelt left North Dakota to become one of the leading conservationists in American history. In 1901, Teddy became president and continued his conservation efforts with the formation of the U.S. Forest Service and the establishment of five national parks and 51 wildlife refuges. Named after him, Theodore Roosevelt National Park honors his conservative efforts, and is an excellent summer getaway for campers, hikers, and nature lovers.
