Teresa - I found this campground and the entire island on the Internet, and I camped there in July 2001.

Campground Review

Hole in the Wall is absolutely fantastic. Our site was on the edge of a sheer cliff and was the shape of a little cup. It was covered with layers of spruce needles, so it felt as if we were in a cave on the side of the wall. Not only was the view awesome but this island smells great. It's a mix of the campfire burning, the salty air, the spruce trees and the millions of wildflowers that cover the island. It's intoxicating!

The fire ring is directly on the edge and we had to be very careful at night when tending the fire because it was impossible to see the exact edge which overlooks Fundy Bay. Fundy Bay is the best place in the Northeast US to see and hear many kinds of whales. Each night we sat there and listened to whales directly below us feeding on the sardines and twice we were able to hear them sing! The islanders tell us that the only place to hear them sing without a hydrophone is at Hole in the Wall Campground. It was truly spectacular! We saw them spouting a few times during the day; but at night it was magical listening to these huge mammals breathing. It was really one of our greatest camping trips.

If you decide to go, we think that cliff edge campsite #4 is the best although every one we looked at was great in some way.

Life on this island is really slow and you have to be the kind of person that can just enjoy . There are miles of great hiking trails and beaches that have smooth rocks of every single color. I haven't yet found the reason for this, but it's hard to believe the range of colors and stripes and dots that these rocks have. Really a cool place and the people are some of the nicest people in the world.

If you're planning a trip to Grand Manan Island, there are a few excellent Web sites to check out and don't forget to bring warm clothing for the cool nights. Have fun and happy camping.
