campinfool - I started going with friends just out of high school 21 years ago, and I camped there in September 2000 and 2001.

Campground Review

The only drawback I feel is the no pets policy (a plus for many). But for good reason - the wildlife is abundant. The deer and ponies wander around wherever they like, but sometimes are a pain, like standing in the middle of the road when you need to be going somewhere or endlessly hanging around your campsite, if you made the mistake of feeding them or leaving food on the picnic table. It is quite easy to pose with them for a picture; they are quite content to just stand there.

The best thing I like about the campground is the proximity to the beach and the main camping loops are right next to the barrier sand dunes. The closest sites are about 30-50 yards from the beach and the farthest sites are about a city block away. Walk over the dune and you're there. No need to pack the car and drive. Four-Wheelers can drive up to 25 miles south on the beach (Virginia border) with a yearly permit, 24 hours a day. You just can't pitch a tent or sleep on the beach. However, sleeping in your beach chair at 2 am with your surf rod set up may work as an excuse. The bath houses are large and usually clean with warm water.

If you are RVing and need electric, only one loop with about 35 sites has it. No full hookups are available - only fill and dump stations. If you are a tent camper, the end of September and into October can be very windy. Overall a very nice campground for beach bums and explorers.
