Madeleine - We found this campground while looking for educational trips for the children. Normally we go to Shenandoah Valley. We took a ride and our route between Luray and New Market Virginia went right through George Washington National Forest. We stopped at a Ranger Station to ask about any historical sites and found out about Camp Roosevelt (the first CCC camp in the nation). We camp here every year in July and October.

Campground Review

This is a great campground because it has ten large, private campsites, which are empty during the week. Our idea of camping is to be neighborless. It is one of the first camps for the Roosevelt Boys. There still are many foundations of the original buildings and many markers on nearby trails about the history of the Massenutten Mountains. Not far is Elizabeth Furnace where you can learn about making pig iron and how the mountain men who worked there lived.
