Barbie - I found this campground while doing Internet research when nearby Galveston State Park was booked, and I tent camped there in September 2004.

Campground Review

Quintana Beach County Park is on an island south of Freeport about an hour from Houston. It was named in honor of General Quintana who assisted Stephen F Austin settle new colonies in Texas. The office is housed in one of the original houses from the first settlers. It's really cool.

I really don't know how to rate the facilities since I've never camped at a county park. I would definitely go back. They have covered and shaded pavilions, air-conditioned cabins overlooking the beach, community house, hiking trails, wooden fishing pier, a playground, six horse shoe pits, three volleyball/badminton courts, pedestrian-only beach, two historic homes, and an interpretive center all connected by boardwalks. Next door is a bird watching sanctuary.

They have paved and level camping sites with individual picnic tables and outdoor grills, group camping areas, full hookup and partial hookup sites, dump station, and bathhouse with restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities.

The beach is really nice, and it's not too crowded. You are really close to the big ships coming in and out of the nearby harbor. It's an awesome sight watching the giants float by you. There is great fishing and crabbing on the pier or jetty.

"Rented the Quintana Pavillion and it was big and roomy. It's the one closest to the beach, so I figured it was the best pick. The downside was that the restrooms and showers were pretty much attached to the pavillion. People kept trying to take over our tables and got upset when asked to leave. I'll never rent THAT pavillion again! However, the pavillion right next to that was ideally located out of the way. Also, the grills (if you bring one) cannot be within 20 feet of the boardwalk. There are no covered areas other than the pavillions, so the grill is out in the full sun. Bring a canopy! The beach was beautiful and not crowded. It was awesome being able to come in out of the beach and wash the sand off. . . The kids took SO many showers! We had a great time. The little cabins were cute and seemed like a great idea and I'll definitely rent one out for a weekend. Everyone not staying there is shooed out right before dark, so the campers and cabin renters get the beach to themselves."
