Jenny - I found this campground searching the Web for Maryland state parks, and I tent camped there in September 2005.
Campground Review
This is a beautifully wooded campground in the Catoctin Mountains just west of Frederick, Maryland on US-40. The park is small, only about 30 sites, but is rarely crowded. There are full hook-ups, electric and non-electric sites, and camper cabins. All of the sites feature a stone-dust pad, a fire ring with adjustable grill, a metal-covered shelf with lantern hook, and a picnic table. The bathhouse is clean and comfortable with flush toilets, sinks and mirrors, and two free hot showers in both the men's and women's sides. The camp hosts are friendly, and there is never a crowded feel. The campsite is down toward the bottom of the mountain, and there are miles of marked trails to hike up about 500 feet to the top to take in vistas for miles around (you can also drive if you would rather). The facilities at the top of the mountain were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, and they offer pavilions, a nature center, a lodge for party rentals, and two stunning overlooks.
This park is connected via marked trails and by state road to Cunningham Falls State park, about 25 miles to the north. The drive is beautiful along the ridge of the mountains. We haven't tried the hike yet. Nearby attractions include Harpers Ferry, WV (20 miles), Antietam Battlefield (15 miles), and the C and O Canal (15 miles), as well as hundreds of miles of trails and rivers for all sorts of outdoor adventures. Mark this down as one of the many wonderful Maryland state parks.
