Campground Review
We have camped at Blackwoods many, many times over the last 25 years. We stay two, three, or five days, and as much as two weeks at a time. It is a great place just off the loop road. There are no showers at the campground, but there are some just outside the gate. There are many activities especially in the summer. Go to the visitor center and pick up the newspaper with the activities, hikes and talks for the month. There are hiking trails from the campground, and even one that goes down to a cliff overlooking the ocean. One can bike on the carriage roads, go boating, take tours, etc. Now there is a free island shuttle bus (thanks to L.L.Bean - seasonal) that takes you from the campground all around the island. You can get off and catch another bus later. There are towns to visit, like Northeast Harbor, where you can buy lobsters and clams right off the boat. Drive up the mountain to see the stars at night or walk with the rangers along the shore.
There is a fresh water pond and beaches for swimming in the park. You have to pay a $20 fee good for 7 days to drive the loop, but it is worth it. Bar Harbor is a great little town to visit for shopping, food, and a nice walk along the ocean. The sites are big, medium, and small (very few). We only had problems once fitting into our site, but the rangers quickly assigned us another one. Some are pull-through sites, but most are back-in. The bathrooms are clean. In the summer, the rangers give talks and slide shows in the campground at night. The rangers are very protective of their campers, when a thunder storm comes through, in warning people and making sure everyone is all right. It's a great place for kids to ride their bikes through the campground with the two big loops. It is our favorite campground and place to visit. We have camped here in the spring, summer and fall, and we would love to try it in the winter with snowmobiles. There are beautiful views on the loop road.
