I found out about this campground from the tour on the trolley the first year I went (2001), and now I stay every year. I tent camped there in October 2006.
Describe your camping trip:
Winter Island has many spaces for people with RVs as well as many tent sites. It is a historical location as well. Each tent site has a grill and a table. There is a common shower and bathroom for men and women. I love going here, because it is always very clean and well kept. The staff is very nice, and they have security at the main gate, if you have any problems during the off hours. I also like the fact that they lock the gate to the roads at 11 PM, so that you are not disturbed by people coming.
Pros: Very clean and neat, security available during off hours, historical landmark, beautiful view out over the water.
Cons: The only negative thing I would say is that this site is also a boat launch for the local residents, and sometimes that is annoying in the early morning.

Nearby attractions: Town of Salem, Peabody Essex Museum, many attractions for the Witch trials, ship tours, trolley of the area, Hawthorne's House of Seven Gables. Many shops and historic buildings to see.
Further comments:
This is a wonderful place to visit year round, however I suggest that going anytime during October is great. They celebrate Holloween like no other place around. If you visit hauntedhappenings.com you will see the full schedule of events that take place during this time of year. The fall foliage is a bonus as well.
