I found out about this campground in the Kauai Trailblazer guidebook, and I tent camped there in April 2007.
Describe your camping trip:
We camped one week and stayed at the Hanalei Bay Resort the next. The Haena Beach campground sits on a grassy mound above the beach. There are places to pitch your tent under palm trees. The beach is a beauty with turquoise water and when we were there gigantic waves booming in. We day hiked the Kalalau Trail during the day and locked our sleeping bags in the car for safety. The other campers were a mix of locals and German tourists. There is a covered area with picnic tables for cooking and water. The site is very dramatic and the beach walks in the morning simply fabulous. Shopping for groceries is about fifteen minutes away in Hanalei.
Pros: The location.
Cons: Wind.
Cons: Wind.
Nearby attractions: Kee Beach, Limahuli Gardens, Tunnels Beach, Hanalei.
Further comments:
We would do this again. If you only come to Kauai to camp and hike the Kalalau Trail, this is the place to stay and get your gear in order the first night. We found other hikes and other beaches with our guidebook Kauai Trailblazer. Some of the other beaches on this end of the island that we liked were Larsens Beach, Secret Beach, Anini Beach and Wylies Beach. The roads to these places are unmarked. I think the locals take down the signs, so you have to follow the book's directions carefully. Following the camping with a stay at a resort was the "cherry on top."
