I found out about this campground from friends, and I RV camped there in October 2007.

Describe your camping trip:

Very spacious, clean, hot showers, a big playground for the kids with lots of room to run and play. Surrounded by beautiful 4500-foot desert mountains within one half to a mile away all around you. The evening sky is hugh and filled with stars, millions on them.
Pros: The staff are very friendly and courteous. I liked how the store has the necessities, big choice of snack food, chips and dips and even includes good for you snacks. It carries breakfast food, lots of drinks and the prices are fair. Lots of peace and quiet. They had cabins to rent by the night as well as tent camping.

Cons: There are pools, but they need to heated.
Nearby attractions: Quads, jeeping ATV terrain, hiking trails and lots of history. Julian is just one half hour away as well as Santa Isabel Casino.

Butterfield Ranch Resort - lovely, quiet placeFebruary 17, 2009By BobS9
"The Butterfield Ranch Resort is tucked away in a valley between Mt. Laguna and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. If you are looking for night-life and entertainment, you are better off going to Las Vegas. Buttefield is about nature, about solitude, about seeing amazing starry skies at nights and pointing out constellations to your kids that you wouldn't see on the clearest night in San Diego. Butterfield is about seeing coyotes on an evening walk, or watching the birds get themselves ready for the day with a morning song. It is about showing nature to your children - the blooming cacti, the wildflowers, the jackrabbits and cottontails. It is about peaceful, quiet neighbors, and an evening soak in one of the 2 hot tubs. It is about history - the old homesteads, Marshal South, and abandoned Indian village sites. I was disappointed to read a review for this campground stating that ""there is nothing to do here"". Sure, there are no baseball fields, but there is a myriad of hiking trails, horseback riding and biking trails, there is a small playground, but if you're looking for a playground you are better of visiting Balboa Park. Butterfield is nature's playground. Butterfield is unique in it's harmonious coexistence with the high elevation (2100) desert that surrounds it. It is a place to relax and commune with nature. To grill a steak or roast marshmallows by a campfire while you listen to coyote songs. And, lovely for all of us ""snowbirds"", the winter weather at Butterfield is great! Sure, there may be one or two snowfalls accumulating a couple of inches of snow that melts the next day, but it is not Montana, and most of the days are warm in the 60's and 70's. That's what we come here for. And we'll be back next winter, too."
