I found out about this campground in the Tonto National Forest Recreation Guide, and I tent camped there in April 2008.
Describe your camping trip:
The campground has a limited number of campsites, about 10 or 12. The sites are well-spaced and heavily wooded so that you almost can't see your neighbor. Campground is above the flood plain of the Verde River, and the river is an easy walk. There are pit toilets, but they can be a long haul in the middle of the night.
Pros: The size of the campsites and the general privacy. Proximity to river. Good locations for launching a canoe or kayak. Each site has its own garbage can and the USFS picks it up daily. It's right outside of town, 25 minutes from central Scottsdale.
Cons: Not much else to do, effectively no hiking trails or other activities. Great hiking on east side of river, but closed January to June due to sensitive breeding habitat. Watch out for red ants.

Nearby attractions: McDowell Mountains hiking and cycling, July-December. Needle Peak. Horseshoe Lake, Verde River.
Further comments: If you don't feel like cooking, there are some top end restaurants within 10 minutes.
