I found out about this campground on the Internet, and I tent camped there in September 2008.
Describe your camping trip:
Mammoth campground was a neat campground, although a bit busy for my tastes. There is a fair amount of traffic as this location is the main hub for the northern entrance. There are several facilities nearby (showers, food and stores). The campground itself sits on a flat bench with gorgeous views of the mountains and valley. The campground has a dry feel, but there are trees. It does feel a bit crowded in terms of site layouts. There is a public meeting area as well as some older style rest rooms. The campground is not as remote as other Yellowstone campgrounds, and it sits in a sort of "mini town" that houses park workers. A herd of elk lives nearby and are easily seen.
Pros: First campground in the park, close to showers, stores, food, close to Mammoth Hot Springs, lots of elk and views are fantastic.
Cons: Noisy, cramped and congested.
Cons: Noisy, cramped and congested.
Nearby attractions: Mammoth Hot Springs.
Further comments: A nice campground, but there are better campgrounds further in the park that offer a more wild experience.
