A park ranger recommended the site to my friends and I, and we tent camped there in June 2008.
Describe your camping trip:
My friends and I camped at South Fork one summer for my bachelor party. It's a small campground, but it has some large sites with enough space between each to offer some privacy. There are plenty of trees, and the Santa Ana River flows next to the campground.
Pros: It's not busy. There's fishing nearby (I have no idea if it's good fishing). There are 4x4 roads nearby. Big Bear is only a half hour away. L.A. is only an hour and a half away.
Cons: Rattlesnakes are active. One was spotted in the campground before we arrived. We, however, did not encounter any. The campground only has vault toilets, but they are clean and well-maintained.
Nearby attractions: Big Bear, Oak Restaurant (about 15 minutes west of South Fork).
Further comments: I really like this campground. I like it more than its more developed neighbor Barton Flats, because of its seclusion.
