Guide Review - Camping, Simple and Cheap by Patrick J. Smith
Patrick J. Smith is an avid family camper (25+ years) and a long time volunteer for the Boy Scouts (10+ years). He claims to have "learned the secrets of how to keep spouse, kids (5), and pets happy while camping." Pat's book "Camping, Simple and Cheap" is a perfect title, because it is filled with practical advice that follows the KISS principle. He emphasizes the skill of not over packing and the ability to take off on a camping trip on short notice and be ready in 30 minutes or less. He doesn't skimp on the practical advice and shares some of the harsher realities that we might encounter while camping, like annoying neighbors. Pat says the best way to cope with unruly neighbors is to remember that they'll be gone soon. Borrowing a line from Foghat, Pat says: "Slow ride, take it easy." The book includes checklists, gear essentials, advice for camping with kids or pets, meal planning, weather awareness, and things to do (and not do) while camping. This is a great handbook for new campers.
