We frequently encounter thunderstorms when we tent camp. What should we be doing: stay in the tent, get in the car, put the tent away from trees?
There's a number of things to consider when camping during a thunderstorm. Stay away from trees and any metal. Keep a low profile, if you are out in the open, and spread out from each other so that you are not all one target to lightning. Avoid ridges and high areas, which will be more prone to lightning strikes, and low areas, which will be more prone to flooding.
I've camped in storms where we stayed in the tent and other times where we headed for the car. Just try to be cautious while in the car to not touch any metal parts. If your tent is under trees or in a high location, then you might consider seeking safety outside the tent until the storm subsides.
Use your best judgment and don't worry about getting wet, you can always dry out later.
