A well-worn trail leaves the Rainbow Falls trailhead and follows the San Joaquin River downstream. The moderate two-and-a-half mile round trip hike is worth every step.
The river plunges 101 feet, creating a spectacular waterfall, mist and rainbow. Midday when the sun is shining is the best time for rainbow viewing.
Rainbow Falls is within Devils Postpile National Monument and has special wilderness regulations. Dogs must be on leash and firearms are not allowed.
Reds Meadow Resort and Pack Station, near the trail head also offers horseback and mule rides to the waterfalls and is a fun option for those who prefer not to hike.
