Grand Canyon National Park
A Grand Canyon Hike

From David Sweet, About.com

It was mid-May of 1978, and I was about to make "The" Grand Canyon hike, which is down the Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River and back up the Bright Angel Trail in a day. The first leg of our adventure took us down the Kaibab Trail to the suspension bridge that crosses the Colorado River. Every part of this bridge was amazingly carried down via mule trains. A short walk downstream took us to Bright Angel Creek, and continuing up Bright Angel Creek we came to Phantom Ranch, where we relaxed for lunch. There's a campground here, cottages, a ranger station and a post office. While here we made sure to mail some post cards. It's the only place in the world where your mail is carried by mule, and it is even postmarked as such. Continuing, we crossed the Colorado River and began our ascent out of the canyon. We had a meal break on the Tonto Plateau at Indian Gardens, then faced the last 4-1/2 miles to a hot shower to remove all that red dirt. Enjoy these photos of a Grand Canyon hike.
