French Onion


A camping recipe from Vicki. When you open the foil, the outer part of the onion might be dark. Remove the dark skin, put the onion in a bowl and cut it up to serve. We like it as topping for our steak or eat it like French onion soup. When you are testing for doneness, be careful not to puncture the foil or you will loose all the juices.

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 50 minutes


  • 1 sweet onion
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • butter
  • garlic salt


Peel the onion. Bore out the center, but not all the way through. Make like a bowl in the center of it. Put the bouillon cube in the center and fill the bowl with butter over the cube. Place a spoonful of butter and the onion on aluminum foil, enough to wrap it up. Sprinkle garlic salt on and around the onion. Bring the corners of the aluminum foil together and twist it shut at the top of the onion. Place the onion into the coals to cook. When you squeeze the onion with tongs and it is soft almost to the middle, it is done.
