From the article: Camping Basics - Leave No Trace
Nobody likes a dirty campground. Whether you are primitive camping or RVing at a campground resort, a little effort is all that need be expended in order to ensure that the next camper arriving at the campsite after you will enjoy it just as much. Now for the most part, campers clean up after themselves, but there are exceptions to every rule, and they usually some mess for the campers who come after them. Other rental services (house boats, cabins, chalets, etc.) commonly charge a cleaning deposit. Do you think campsites would be cleaner, if campgrounds charged a cleaning deposit? Would you mind paying it? Share Your Thoughts
Cleaning Deposit
- Campgrounds need to do a final inspection. If the site is not up to condition, then a service fee large enough to cover site, shower and bath house.

Hmmm, that depends
- Let me say this. I have been to camp sites and the folks before us have NOT been good about cleaning up. We try to leave the site the way we would like to find it. It is a matter of consideration. I feel having to pay a fee will only encourage campers to leave the site a mess. Maybe it should be like a motel. IF you leave a mess, you are charged extra, IF NOT, you do not need to pay an additional charge. As adults, can we not be responsible?

Cleaning Deposit
- No. As much as it now cost to camp, keeping the grounds clean should be a given. I clean after myself, but I should not have to clean after others.

Charge for Campgrounds
- I have already been priced out of campgrounds (the latest being Tennessee State Parks $15. per pet non-refundable). I am a responsible owner, walk my dogs, pick up after my dogs, and as I've stated previously, even carry extra poop bags for people who have been careless. If you're going to charge a fee for pets, charge one for children as well--my dogs don't use any power and they don't use the bath houses--so they actually are cheaper guests than kids. Ridiculous comparison, I know, but in rebuttal of the ridiculous charges at some campgrounds. Fair is fair. I agree with the other poster. If park rangers/hosts see abuse, the abuser should be asked to leave.

Mr.Clean
- Most people clean up after themselves as it should be. The clean up should be in the fee and the ones that clean up should be rewarded. If a campground is having that much trouble it should have a security deposit that is returned when you leave if your site is clean. That would be an incentive to clean up after themselves.

Cleaning
- I would not like to pay for it. I hate to pay for someone elses mess. People need to be more courteous to others.

Cleaning Deposit
- I don't want to pay extra fees. When I arrive at a campsite, I check it for cigarette butts, dog poop, etc., and I clean up, if necessary. For the most part, however, I find campgrounds to be clean. If I see litter, I pick it up. If an inconsiderate dog owner has not cleaned up along trails, I carry extra bags when walking my two labs, and I pick it up and dispose of the poop myself. Shame that I have to do this, but hey...in the end it makes my stay more pleasant.

Yes
- Swell idea! It is probably the only remedy for this problem.

Charging Clean-Up Fees
- I think it's a good idea. I'm afraid, though, that for there to be an "incentive" may require fees that are too high for some, and the "standards" for return of deposits could get pretty "arbitraty".

Cleaning Deposit
- I think that it is a shame to have to do this, but some people are slobs and should have to pay. Those who are not, should not.

Clean Campsites
- I think that there should be a $100.00 deposit for making sure the campsites are clean. I know I have gone camping and there was dirty diapers, newspapers and leftover food for the animals to get into and strung all over the campsite. I was refunded my deposit and camping fees for cleaning the campsite. It took me 2 hours to rake all the trash that was strung from my tent to the lake. When I left I was offered a job, but had to refuse because I was not from that state.

My thoughts on clean up
- I think that holding a deposit for clean up service is ok. It's a shame we have to even have this conversation though.

No Charge
- My family is very tidy, and we make a point to clean up after ourselves. We do have an RV, however, I choose to use the showers provided. I have not come across a campground that has not been kept up. However, most campsites have a campground host that stays at the park or campground for no charge. Is it not the host's job to clean the park, restrooms, and get the site ready for the next camper? Therefore, if the campground has a host, and the site or bathroom is dirty, I think that managment should discuss this with the host.
- —Guest Rachael
I say no.
- I think there should be another way to get others more conscious of waste.

No
- I don't think so. I think it is up to us to keep our site clean. In my state of Utah, the campground hosts go around and make sure the site is cleaned for the next occupants. If there is anything left behind, they know who occupied the site. Never been a problem for us.
